Sayulita Life’s Monthly $5,000 Donation Goes to Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona

Spotlight on Local Education: A Conversation with the Principal of Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona

Nestled just one block from the ocean in the heart of Sayulita, Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona is a vibrant public elementary school serving nearly 450 children between the ages of 6 and 11. With a dedicated staff of 20 passionate educators and team members, the school plays a vital role in the community—offering children a safe, enriching place to learn, grow, and play, while giving parents peace of mind. As the principal warmly puts it, “We’re the most beautiful school in Mexico—not just because of our location, but because of the heart and energy within our walls.”

What are some of the biggest challenges the school faces?

Like many public schools, we face a variety of challenges. One of the biggest is student absenteeism and learning gaps among some of our children. We also have ongoing infrastructure issues—our proximity to the ocean means the buildings deteriorate more quickly, so we’re constantly working on maintenance. The school sits on one hectare of land, which means keeping the grounds in good shape is a continuous effort.

How do donations impact the school and its students?

Donations are always incredibly appreciated. While the school is government-funded, unfortunately, the state isn’t always able to meet all the needs—especially for a school like ours with such high demand. Thanks to donations from visitors, local organizations, and parents, we’ve been able to make real improvements: installing new classroom flooring, providing air conditioning and fans, securing clean drinking water, and even supporting housing for teachers. Every donation helps us create a better learning environment for our students.

How will Sayulita Life’s donation of a new sound system benefit the school?

This new sound system is a fantastic addition! Our school is very culturally active—we host dances, sports events, performances, and celebrations for students and parents throughout the year. Having a proper sound system will elevate the quality of these events and create a more professional and enjoyable experience. Just last week, we presented a theater play for the children. It was beautiful thanks to the teachers’ efforts, but with a better sound system, it would have been magical—every child would’ve been able to hear and fully enjoy the performance.

What are some of the school’s most urgent current needs?

Right now, one of our biggest needs is better internet connectivity. At the moment, we have a single connection that only reaches the administrative office. In 2025 and beyond, it’s essential that every classroom has internet access. Solving this would be a huge step forward for our students’ education.

How do teachers and staff support students despite limited resources?

I couldn’t ask for a better team. Our teachers show their dedication every single day. They go above and beyond—checking in on students who are absent, adapting lessons that didn’t work, reaching out to parents, and collaborating with one another to find better teaching strategies. Many stay after hours to help students struggling with reading, to rehearse dances or plays, or to guide enrichment activities. They understand that while academic learning is important, what truly lasts are the emotions and experiences children carry with them.

How did students and staff react to the recent Sound System donation?

We are always deeply grateful for donations. They allow us to dream, to plan, and to implement activities and improvements that directly benefit the children. We are especially thankful for those who walk past our school and take the time to stop, ask questions, and find ways to contribute. Our doors are always open to the Sayulita community.

What kind of school events or activities bring the community together? How can visitors support the school?

Everyone can contribute in their own way. One visitor once asked if he could DJ during recess—and the kids loved his electronic music set! Another was a retired English teacher who came by during her vacation and read a story to the students. We’ve had people donate funds for repairs and painting projects. Every person who visits or gives back helps strengthen our school, and we appreciate each and every gesture of support.

If someone wants to donate or help, what’s the best way?

The best way to help is by connecting with us directly. The school has a director, a parent committee, and an open line of communication with the Sayulita community. Anyone interested can reach out to learn more about our current needs and how to get involved.

Is there a message you’d like to share with those who made this donation possible?

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your support means so much. Please know that Escuela Primaria Damián Carmona has its doors open to you—whether you want to propose a project, visit the students, or simply learn more about what we do. The children here are always learning, playing, and creating—and we invite you to experience that joy with us. We also warmly invite you to our upcoming Book Fair on April 10th, where you can see firsthand the energy and creativity of our school community.
