Sayulita Life’s $5,000 Donation for September: Campamento Tortuguero
Sayulita Life gives back to the community every month by donating $5,000 to a local cause or charity in need. Sayulita Life has chosen Campamento Tortuguero as the recipient this month.
Campamento Tortuguero, or The Turtle Camp, in Sayulita, is a voluntary community organization dedicated to preserving the native sea turtles that come every year in large numbers to Sayulita’s beaches to lay their eggs.
The turtle camp has many moving parts, all working toward their goal of protecting the sea turtles from poachers. Their main responsibilities include beach patrols to collect freshly laid eggs, carrying out the incubation of the eggs, the release of the baby turtles at sunset on the North end of Sayulita’s beach, as well as beach cleanings and environmental education activities with students from schools in our community.
The donation from Sayulita Life will go toward purchasing an ATV for more efficient turtle nest rescues. Up until now, all beach patrols have been done daily on foot and poachers will sometimes beat the volunteers to the eggs. The ATV will allow volunteers to move much quicker with their egg relocation.
This is just the start. We need your help! Campamento Tortuguero needs to raise additional funds in order to purchase the ATV and is requesting your support. If you are able to make a donation please donate via Paypal to sayulitaturtlecamp@gmail.com
If you have more questions about the camp or about how to get involved, please email sayulitaturtlecamp@gmail.com or call 322-118-7225 (English) or 322-132-7381 (Espanol). For more information about Campamento Tortuguero and its mission, please visit their Sayulita Life Web Page.
