Sayulita Life’s $5,000 Donation for August: Escuela Cooperativa
Sayulita Life gives back to the community every month by donating $5,000 to a local cause or charity in need. Sayulita Life has chosen Escuela Cooperativa as the lucky recipient this month.
Escuela Cooperativa was founded in 2017 with the mission to educate local 3-5-year-old preschool children free of cost. Located on a hilltop on the south side of Sayulita, with instruction delivered in Spanish, this tuition-free model operates fully on a donation and volunteer basis. Monday through Friday, the school offers an educational curriculum that includes basic literacy and numeracy skills. Currently serving 26 local children, Escuela Cooperativa is an innovative educational opportunity for Sayulita’s youngest children.
Sayulita is rich with tradition and culture which is celebrated and encouraged in a nurturing learning environment at Escuela Cooperativa. Families are an integral part of the school. In place of tuition, they contribute their time by providing hot lunches for the children, cleaning, and helping to maintain the property. The parents’ council is very engaged with the school and meets monthly with the teachers.
In addition to two full-time trained teachers, children also benefit from weekly extracurricular activities such as yoga, dance, music, and the recently added English language program which was established last Fall specifically for 6-11-year-olds. In the last couple of weeks, the school has expanded the program in partnership with Mujeres Movimiento to offer a five-week English Language immersion program. With the $5,000 donation from Sayulita Life along with additional support, Escuela Cooperativa can continue this highly beneficial program year-round.
