La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club: Sunday Polo Brunch
La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club is set in a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop of jungle-covered mountains in San Pancho, just 15 minutes from Sayulita. The Polo Lounge is three levels (lounge, restaurant, and terrace) and has a feel of luxurious exclusivity without the pretentiousness. I felt relaxed, yet excited as I arrived at La Patrona for their weekly Sunday Polo Brunch.
A waitress approached our group with a tray of traditional and passion fruit mimosas, and the delicious aroma of grilled food wafted through the air from the outdoor grilling area. (Later I would discover all of the deliciousness that was awaiting: Barbeque ribs, shrimp on a stick, prime rib, octopus, swordfish, bone marrow, as well as many other items, including plenty of vegetarian options.) My eyes landed on the buffet of cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, salads, and other goodies set up in the first floor lounge area, and my mouth watered. I had heard Hugo Ahumada, the chef at La Patrona was top-notch, but, WOW, the assortment of food was truly exceptional and definitely went above and beyond my expectations.
Our group made ourselves comfortable on the third floor terrace, where umbrellas blocked the sun and an inviting breeze gently blew. Right away, I noticed the view of the perfectly manicured polo field. I kicked back with a full plate of food and one of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve had in a long time as I waited for the exhibition polo match to begin.
Prior to going to La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club, I hadn’t a clue about the rules of polo. In fact, I didn’t even know there were four periods, with each one lasting seven and a half minutes. However, the announcer did a great job of informing everyone what was going on, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching a sport live that I had never before seen.
Following the match, a band played for two hours, and the ambiance was so fun and inviting that I stayed until they were finished. From Frank Sinatra to Bob Marley and many other popular artists, the band played an assortment of music that had most everyone singing and swaying along.
As my friends and I were getting ready to leave, we were already talking about making plans to come to another Sunday Polo Brunch. For just 800 pesos, it includes your admission to the polo club, all you can eat brunch, and bottomless mimosas. A full bar also awaits for an extra charge, but is definitely worth it, especially if you are a Bloody Mary or craft beer fan. So, what are you waiting for?
