Sayulita Days (February 18-24, 2008)

Sayulita celebrates its day on February 24, coinciding with the Day of the Mexican Flag, a traditional celebration as well.  In Sayulita, the town party used to coincide with Ejido Day. However, in order to have yet one more fiesta, the Ejido day has been changed to November 24, leaving the week leading up to Sayulita Day especially for our pueblo’s celebration.

Sayulita Days sounds in every corner of town, with traditional live music known as “música de banda” playing in the streets. The entire town turns out to celebrate. One of the favorite places for children (and adult children too!) is in the baseball field where you will find motorized carnival rides, games and plenty of other entertainment. Try a shot from a pellet gun or throw a rock and try to break a glass bottle!  It depends on your ability and good aim! And if you win don’t forget your reward which could range from a free six-pack of beer, a bottle of tequila, a giant stuffed animal, a bag of cookies, or even a set of cookware.

As in all true celebrations in Mexico, Mexican food is a priority. There are a multitude of temporary restaurants to enjoy quesadillas, burritos, tacos, and sopes (with meat or vegetarian). In additional there are also two blocks completely packed with a traveling street market including several vendors and different things to sample and/or purchase including delicious and traditional sweets like the known “cajeta” (with milk) or other natural fruits like coconut or guayaba (fruit that grows in this area of México). You can find and enjoy all this fun from February 18 to the 24.

With the passage of time, a few things have definitely changed in the Sayulita celebration. One of the actual organizers (the party is organized by Sayulita townsfolk) remarked that “it used to be a familiar party, just for people of town”. Now however, residents from neighboring towns actually look forward to this grand event with people coming from Bucerias to Guayabitos.  Of course, North American expatriates and short-term visitors to Sayulita have also planned to be here in town to enjoy this spectacular event.   Everybody is welcome at Sayulita Days!

The big day for Sayulita is February 24th when from around 5:00 AM in the morning, families go to the public square downtown and sing “Las Mañanitas” (popular song for birthdays). The parade starts at 9 a.m. featuring the Queen of Sayulita, the Princess of Sayulita, “los charros” (cowboys) and a large cast of musicians.  The musicians will continue to stroll around and play music in several locations of Sayulita.  Everyone is festive and ready for dancing….even the horses dance during Sayulita Days!!!

After the parade and afternoon siesta, the celebration continues in the bullring (located at the “crucero”, one block after the main route Tepic-Vallarta coming to Sayulita) with bull-riding and a nationally famous band.  From there, head back to the baseball diamond for more carnival rides, games, and yet another huge music concert.

6. One positive change you have observed in Sayulita:  The arrival of tourists and tourism has offered great opportunities to the local population, allowing them to either start businesses in their home or sell one or more pieces of their real estate and use the proceeds to invest in a tourist-related business.

7. One negative change you have observed in Sayulita:  (Luis wanted to list TWO negative impacts).  (1) The amount of cars being used in Sayulita creates traffic, parking, speeding and dust problems.  (2)  Foreigners from outside of Sayulita are purchasing real estate and blocking (or attempting to block) access to areas where locals have always visited.  (Examples include Carricitos beach and the walkway to San Pancho from Sayulita.)

8. How do you imagine Sayulita will be in ten years?  I would like to see a distinguished pueblo different from any other town in Mexico; one that spreads naturally into the surrounding jungle with controlled growth and no buildings over three stories tall  However, the pueblo will need to work together for this since the current governmental authorities and planners have very different plans/zoning for Sayulita.

9. One recommendation or comment for the people of Sayulita:  Join together in unity for a better Sayulita.  Working together as one large force will ensure a town we can be proud of for decades to come.

La Fiesta de Sayulita

Sayulita festeja su día el 24 de Febrero, coincidiendo con la también tradicional celebración del día de la Bandera de México. En Sayulita, la fiesta del pueblo también coincidía con el Día del Ejido, pero para no confundir más a la gente éste se pasó al 24 de Noviembre, dejando Febrero especialmente para la celebración de Sayulita.
La fiesta de Sayulita suena en cada rincón del pueblo, con la tradicional música de banda tocando en las calles. Todos salen a celebrar. Uno de los lugares favoritos para los niños (y para los niños adultos también) es el campo de baseball. Allí puedes encontrar juegos mecánicos y más entretenimientos. Prueba un tiro, depende de tu habilidad y puntería. ¡Si ganas, no olvides tu premio!
Como en las verdaderas celebraciones, la comida mexicana no puede faltar.
Varios puestos para disfrutar quesadillas, burritos, tacos, sopes (puedes pedirlos con carne o con verduras). También hay 2 cuadras de mercado callejero, con distintos puestos y cosas para comprar, como los deliciosos dulces típicos, de cajeta (con leche) o de frutas naturales, como coco y guayaba (que crecen en esta zona del país). Puedes encontrar y disfrutar de toda esta diversión desde el 18 de Febrero hasta el 24.
Con el paso del tiempo, algunas cosas han cambiado en la celebración de Sayulita. Uno de sus organizadores actuales (la fiesta está organizada por gente del pueblo) cuenta que “solía ser una celebración más familiar, sólo acudía la gente del pueblo”. Actualmente también vienen de otras partes, de Higuera Blanca y Punta de Mita. Ahora hay más público, incluyendo también a los turistas. Pero, ¡todos son bienvenidos! Otro cambio fue con el tradicional castillo de pólvora. El gobierno lo prohibió para evitar incendios, ahora se hace sólo con luces.
Todo está listo para el 24 de Febrero. Desde las 5 de la mañana las familias se reúnen en la plaza del centro para cantar las Mañanitas. El desfile empieza a las 9 a.m. con la reina de Sayulita, las princesas, los charros y los músicos.  Luego la celebración continúa en la Plaza de Toros, ubicada en la entrada de Sayulita, a una cuadra del crucero Tepic- Puerto Vallarta.
Los músicos caminan y tocan por los alrededores, la música se oye en todas partes, y todos están listos para el baile. ¡Los caballos también bailan! ¡Ver para creer!

7. Algún cambio negativo que haya observado en Sayulita: (Luís quiso notar dos impactos negativos) (1) La cantidad de carros que son usados actualmente crean problemas de polvo, transito, estacionamiento, exceso de velocidad. (2) Los extranjeros están comprando bienes raíces y bloqueando (o tratando de bloquear), las áreas que los locales han visitado siempre. Ejemplos son la Playa de Carricitos y el camino de San Pancho a Sayulita. 
8. ¿Cómo imagina Sayulita en 10 años?  Me gustaría ver un pueblo diferente, que se distinga de cualquier otro pueblo de México; un pueblo que se extienda naturalmente en la selva, con control de crecimiento, y no con construcciones de más de tres pisos de altura. No obstante, el pueblo necesitará trabajar unido desde que las autoridades gubernamentales actuales tienen planes muy diferentes para Sayulita.  
9. Alguna recomendación o comentario que quiera hacer a la gente de Sayulita: Unirnos por un Sayulita mejor. Trabajar juntos como una sola gran fuerza nos asegurará un pueblo que esté orgulloso en las décadas por venir.

Deportes en Sayulita

Como cuentan los locales de Sayulita, el baseball es el Rey de los deportes. Y el equipo de Sayulita es el orgullo del pueblo. Conocido como las Jaibas del Pacífico, acostumbraban a ganar todos los partidos, fueron campeones por más de 20 años. ¡Y ya están de vuelta y listos para ganar! Un nuevo campeonato ha comenzado… Este domingo jugarán a las 10: 45 de la mañana.  Jaibas del Pacífico (de Sayulita) recibirá a un equipo de Santiago Sentispal (un pueblo cerca de San Blas) por las eliminatorias.  ¡Y ya están entrenando!  

El baseball no es el único deporte en Sayulita: se juega al softball y también al fútbol. Actualmente hay partidos de “fútbol de barrios” (entre colonias), con equipos del Mangal, Tamarindal, Centro, etc.
El campo de Baseball abre sus puertas todos los días desde las 2 de la tarde.
