Grupo Pro-Sayulita

The usual suspects met at 7:15 at the Rain Tree. It was suggested by Luis Verdin R that we break into three groups to discuss the issue of how to move forward with solving the garbage issue.
Luis Verdin R went over the last meeting where we discussed a new logo “Sayulimpia” to be used on garbage containers and possible the trucks and the use of garbage cans on all corners in the town proper and then to follow up later with adding recycling at a later date. It was also reported that the local police were watching where people were dumping garbage to tell them to stop. The final comment was that the local garbage truck would make one more run to the dump per day.
One group, including Evelyne Boren, Cyndy Jones, Janice Rothrock and Mickey Cunningham discussed how to raise money auctioning off one of Evelyne’s paintings worth $3,000 USD as well as having a competition on how to get the kids involved through a painting contest and then painting garbage drums.
Another group, including Marcos Scott, Enrique Moeller, Cap Sparling, and Javier Chavez discussed the issue of buying large garbage containers that were available from a village near Guadalajara. It was agreed that we would need additional information regarding size, weight, metal or plastic, etc before making a decision and also the potential problems of placing them around town.
The third group of the two Verdins (father and son) and one other member discussed how to move forward aggressively now. They came back to the general group and proposed that we buy a new pickup that would gather garbage from homes where the current garbage truck cannot go and garbage cans and raise the money in the community.
1. The truck would cost about $150,000 Ps.
2. Two Way radios (2) so that the pickup can co-ordinate with the garbage truck to drop of garbage ($450).
The pickup and the radios would be turned over to the Municipio to use and they would pay for maintenance, gas, insurance and the workers.
It was decided that we would have a fund raiser in part by raffling off Evelyne’s painting and also asking home owners (both Mexican and foreign) to contribute $1,000 Pesos to contribute to the cause. A small group volunteered to meet on Tuesday Morning at Jessica’s Coffee shop on the corner across from the plaza at 8am to discuss this issue.
There was more discussion about how we can get to be one of the “Pueblo Magico” towns and it was suggested that we hire a bus to take a large number of people from the town on a visit to one of these towns to see what they have done and how they did it, all towards our copying what we felt would work for Sayulita. The closest town is the “island” town 4-5 hours north of Sayulita that is believed to be the original home of the Aztecs.
A final comment is that we move the meeting to a time that would allow Damien and Alonso from Don Pedro’s to attend our meetings.
