This week's La Sayulera interview is with El Sayulero's own Julia Caranci. Julia reports on much-needed donations of supplies for the Public Schools, and how those of you returning to Sayulita can lend a hand in transporting them south of the border.

| | Loads of Donated School Supplies Need "Mules" to Get to Sayulita!
A couple from California is seeking help to bring a large load of much-needed math and science supplies to waiting students in Sayulita.
Bill and Debbi Hopman are retired educators from California who first came to Sayulita last February. "We were so impressed with the importance that parents place on education when we were in Sayulita," Debbi said. "We never saw any children on the beaches or streets during the weekday -- they were in school." The pair returned home with a strong desire to do something for the students of Sayulita. They learned that elementary and middle-school-aged children here need math and science supplies - so they put the word out.
 Bill's former school supported the project. He placed a box in the staff room for donations. The couple also inquired at Instructional Media Centers, requesting any unused supplies. As well, they looked in the newspaper for back-to-school coupons and shopped for supplies themselves. Teachers from Wanda Hirsch Elementary School also made donations. Well, the call was answered, and then some! The couple has amassed three boxes containing 52 compasses, 50 protractors, 10 dozen rulers, 18 dozen pens and a variety of crayons, markers, erasers, scissors and colored pencils. In addition, they have five boxes of foam pattern blocks, fraction circles and tiles, attribute blocks and counters. Finally, they've collected another three boxes of plastic connecting cubes, base ten blocks, spinners, and 40 student clocks. It's a veritable bonanza!
 "Both of us are Lions Club members. We place a high importance on volunteering. We place a high importance on giving," Bill explained. "We know our efforts will be deeply appreciated by not only the teachers, but by the students as well."The project has become a family affair. Leah Neary, who is Bill and Debbi's son's girlfriend and a teacher, is working at her school to get additional supplies and trying to get her 4th grade class (Castlemont Elementary School, Cupertino, CA) to become pen pals with a 4th grade class in Sayulita. But first there's the small matter of delivering those math and science supplies. "We probably have 10 boxes total," Debbi explained. "Now our challenge is how to get them to Sayulita!" That's where Sayulero readers may be able to help. The Hopmans arrive here in January and will bring as many of the supplies as they can, but they can't bring them all. The couple is in touch with possible contacts to help, but still may need assistance. If anyone can help get the supplies into Mexico, contact the Hopmans.
Un Monton de Donaciones de Utiles Escolares para Sayulita!
Una pareja de California esta buscando ayuda para traer una gran cantidad de articulos de matematicas y ciencias de primera necesidad a estudiantes en Sayulita. Bill and Debbi Hopman son educadores retirados de California quienes visitaron por vez primera Sayulita en febrero pasado. "Nos impresionamos mucho con la importancia que tienen los padres en la educacion cuando estuvimos aqui en Sayulita," dice Debbi. "Nosotros nunca vimos ningun nino en las playas o calles durante el dia-ellos estaban en la escuela.La pareja regreso a casa con un fuerte deseo de hacer algo por los estudiantes de Sayulita. Ellos supieron que los ninos que cursan primaria y secundaria aqui necesitan articulos de matematicas y ciencia-asi que pusieron manos a la obra.
 La antigua escuela de Bill apoya el proyecto. El coloco una caja en la administracion para recibir donaciones. La pareja ademas se comunico al Instructional Media Center, pidiendo cualquier articulo que no se estuviera usando. Asi mismo, ellos revisaron los periodicos buscando cupones y promociones para el regreso a clases para despues comprar por su cuenta. Profesores de la escuela primaria Wanda Hirsch tambien hicieron donaciones. Bueno, la llamada tuvo respuesta, y de que forma! La pareja ya cuenta con tyres cajas que contienen 52 compases, 50 transportadores, 10 docenas de reglas, 18 docenas de plumas y una variedad de crayones, marcadores, borradores, tijeras y lapices de colores. Ademas, tienen cinco cajas de figuras de hule espuma, tela, etc. Finalmente, colectaron otras tres cajas de cobos de plastico para conectar, hiladores y 40 relojes para estudiantes. Es una autentica bonanza!
 "Ambos somos miembros del Lions Club. Para nosotros es muy importante ser voluntarios. Es muy importante el poder dar. Explica Bill. "Sabemos que nuestros esfuerzos seran profundamente apreciados no solo por los profesores, sino tambien por los estudiantes." El proyecto se ha convertido en un asunto familiar. "Ahora nuestro reto es econtrar manera de traerlas para Sayulita!" En eso podrian ayudar los lectores del Sayulero. Los Hopman llegan aqui en enero y traeran todos los articulos que puedan, pero no alcanzan traer todo. Bigger and Better
Tropical House, a favorite local eatery formerly on Calle Miramar, has now reopened at a new location and under new ownership but with chef Michel's same fantastic cooking. The new and improved Tropical House has taken over the quaint garden space on Avenida Palmar on Sayulita's North end that was formerly occupied by another favorite restaurant-A Bicyclette.
 The new owners Eileen and Dennis Loftus were living in Colorado and working respectively for Habitat for Humanity and in engineering, until they decided to make a permanent move to Sayulita over a year ago after vacationing here many times over the years. They started out as regulars at the first incarnation of Tropical House, and were captured by Michel's fantastic cooking and the relaxed atmosphere. When the road construction around the old location really slowed business and insisted that Michel either change locations or close down his kitchen, Eileen and Dennis decided to step in as partners to make such a move possible. Thanks to the partnership with Eileen and Dennis, Michel is once again able to offer "the best food for the best value," as Eileen describes his typical menu. Born in Texas but raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Michel brings many different influences to the kitchen. Part of his inspiration comes from a family recipe book published from their winery called Pirtle and 4-star restaurant called Vineyards in Missouri. He also learned from his French grandfather and uncle, who were chefs as well. Just by genetics alone, Michel already came to the kitchen with an incredible palette, but he also has worked creating recipes in restaurants in Missouri, Miami, Texas, and Guadalajara. It was while he was working in Guadalajara that he first came to Sayulita, and as he says, "like everyone else, just fell in love."
 Now at the new Tropical House, the same value conscious and delicious tropical meets Mediterranean menu applies, but with some great additions. For one thing there is now a full bar, and the owners spent weeks carefully selecting a 3-tiered wine last that ranges from the most basic to the most sophisticated. Many of the wines behind the bar at Tropical House are not available elsewhere in Sayulita, and the selection is quite global; with wines from Argentina, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. Soon there will also be handcrafted microbrews on draft. The new restaurant will also be hosting musical acts during the High Season that complement the tropical fusion atmosphere, and Tropical House will also be functioning as a gallery space for art openings. Happy Hours, Sports Sundays, and special menus for Mexican holidays to highlight Mexican culture are also regular features planned for the restaurant. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and with everything from an espresso bar to an extensive wine list, there is no time of day or occasion that the cool garden at the new Tropical House is not perfect for. So head over to Sayulita's North End just a block from the beach, and get a taste of Michel's delightful and unique cuisine!
Tropical House Abre de Nuevo y Mejor
Tropical House, uno de los lugares favoritos que anteriormente estaba en la calle Miramar, ha reabierto en una nueva direccion y con nuevos duenos pero manteniendo la fantastica cocina del chef Michel. El nuevo y mejor Tropical House esta insatalado ahora en el pintoresco jardin en la avenida Palmar en la parte norte de Sayulita y que anteriormente estuvo ocupado por otro restaurante favorito-A Bicyclette.
 Los nuevos duenos Eillen y Dennis Loftus vivian en Colorado trabajando respectivamente en Habitat para la Humanidad y en ingenieria, hasta que decidieron mudarse permanentemente a Sayulita hace aproximadamente un ano, despues de haber vacacionado aqui muchas veces a traves de los anos. Ellos comenzaron a frecuentar la primera version de Tropical House y se convirtieron en asiduos clientes del lugar, fueron capturados por la fantastica comida de Michel y por la atmosfera relajada. Cuando comenzo la construccion del camino cerca de la antigua locacion, las ventas disminuyeron, lo que obligo a Michel a cambiar de lugar o bien, cerrar su cocina, asi que Eileen and Dennis decidieron dar el paso y ser socios para hacer posible tal movimiento. El lugar cuenta con un bar, y los duenos pasaron semanas seleccionando cuidadosamente vinos en un rango que va del mas basico hasta el mas sofisticado. Muchos de los vinos detras de la barra en Tropical House no estan disponibles en ningun otro lugar en Sayulita, y la seleccion es totalmente global; con vinos de Argentina, Sudafrica, Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Mexico. Proximamente habra cerveza de barrfil artesanal. El nuevo restaurante tendra numeros musicales durante la temporada alta para complementar la atmosfera tropical, ademas de que el lugar tambien estara funcionando como una galeria de arte. Hora Feliz, Domingos Deportivos asi como menu especial en dias festivos mexicanos para celebrar la cultura son de las cosas que se planea ofrecer. Abierto para el desayuno, comida y cena, y con todo desde un esspreso a una extensa lista de vinos, no hay hora del dia u ocasion especial en que el jardin de Tropical House sea el lugar perfecto para pasar un inolvidable momento. Asi que ve a la parte norte de Sayulita, a solo una cuadra de la playa, y prueba el delicioso sabor de la cocina unica de Michel!

Due to a number of questions regarding the safety of withdrawing cash at any of the five local ATM machines, I sat down with Dean Regher and Sergio Bravo Mellado of Direct Cash Management to separate the facts from the rumors. They have operated ATM's all over the area from Vallarta to Sayulita, Mexico for the past four years. When I asked Dean and Sergio about the possibility of ATM fraud occurring in Sayulita, Dean explained that he has heard that people in Sayulita are feeling that people have been getting "ripped off" at ATM's. According to Dean, "As much as I hear this, I must first say that it is rare, but it does happen! But please... for every 100 or even 1000 times you hear this, it might happen only once! Please let me explain how things work. People have a natural tendency to hear the words "debit terminals", "ATM's", "credit card machines", "pos terminals" etc, and link things as being all of the ATM variety, and that is simply not the case! 99.9% of actual criminal intentions are a result of someone stealing secured information from a "Credit Card machine"! He also added that, "Most of the time, it is dishonest employees 'swapping out' a legitimate Pos terminal, for one that steals your information... (which is later used to de-fraud you) The other way bad things happen, is for criminals to use a 'Skimmer'. This is basically a fake card reader and/or keypad that is attached to an ATM. The reason this does not happen often, is directly related to security".
 "You will notice that most Mexican National Banks use ATMs that are very familiar looking... and they are! They are the ATMs that we used to have in Canada and the USA 10-20 years ago. The Mexican banks have purchased thousands of ATMs from banks in Canada and the USA that had outlived their electronic security life! They are unable to accept security measures that are in place in Canada and the USA! So whatever the crooks figured out 10-20 years ago is easily worked today! ATM's that take your card are dangerous.... Use only ATMs that do not have you physically let go of your card!Direct Cash ATM's are located in "Breakfast" -on the beach, and "Café de la plaza"-across from the square and charge 35 pesos, where our only independent competitor, Cardtronics has raised their rates to 55 pesos."

 I am a little Maltese puppy (YES, most likely purebred!). I was thrown away because I was born with a congenital bone defect which prevented me from walking on my hind legs. The family called me Foca (which means seal in Spanish) because my back legs flopped to each side like a seal fin and I could only drag myself along. WELL, thanks to the heroic efforts of a very special retired lady who is a physical therapist (PhD), I am WALKING and RUNNING and growing beautifully. Because I am very special I need a special home!
 Soy un cachorro Maltese. Me tiraron porque naci con un defecto congential en mi hueso. No pude caminar con mis piernas traseras. La familia me llamaron Foca porque tenia que caminar con mis piernas traseras arrastrando y se veia como aletas de una foca. Bueno, gracias a una persona muy especial (una terapista fisica), ahora puedo CAMINAR y CORRER y crecer como si no tuviera problemas. Porque soy muy especial necesito un hogar muy especial.

 1. Born in Sayulita? I am from Ontario originally, but have been a West Coast (BC, Canada) girl for 15 years now. I have lived in Vancouver and in several towns and cities on Vancouver Island over the years (Victoria, Ladysmith and Port Alberni). I first came to Sayulita with my boyfriend at the time in 2003. I visited for 10 days and it wasn't enough! One year later I quit my job and came to live with him for six months. I did that for two seasons, then eventually went back to BC for work, although I kept coming back for shorter visits to Sayulita every year. Last October (2008), I quit my job as a newspaper editor on Vancouver Island and moved to Sayulita for a longer term. I've been here for a year now.
1. Nacida en Sayulita? Yo soy de Ontario originalmente, pero he sido una chica de la Costa Oeste (BC, Canadá) hace 15 años. 3. Education Level? I attended high school in Thunder Bay, Ontario, then went on to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver after moving out west in 1993. I took a B/A in English Literature, which I completed in 1997, then went on to take some additional post graduate college courses in communications, to prepare for a career in journalism.

I also freelance in my spare time and have had some experience working in the publishing field. Since moving to Sayulita I have also added rental manager and property manager to my resume. These last two are my main jobs in Sayulita right now.

5. What are your future plans? I have a new partner in my life and so I am exploring new future business plans with him, including real estate and running our own business. I may start my own newsletter back in Canada, or work running a campground in BC next summer. But regardless I will always be a writer and continue to pursue my love of reading and writing.

 6. What are your long term goals?My long term life goals are to find a partner I can spend the rest of my life with and make a future with that person. I would love to own a few homes in BC, and maybe one here in Sayulita, and make a business doing rentals and taking care of my homes. I would also like to be able to work from home continuing on in my writing career.
6. ¿Cuáles son sus metas a largo plazo? Mis metas a largo plazo para la vida son encontrar una pareja con quien puedo quedar para el resto de mi vida y hacer un futuro. Me encantaria ser dueña de unas casas en BC, y tal vez una en Sayulita, y hacer un negocio rentando y cuidando casas. Tambien me gustaria poder trabajar desde la casa siguienda con mi carrerra como escritora.
7. Do you have any stories you could share? This summer, when I first moved into my house-sitting home, I came walking down the stairs one evening and saw a very large snake sitting on one of the stairs hissing at me! I ran off to find something to catch it with, but when I returned, it had vanished. My bedroom door was open, so I had no idea if it had slithered into my room or where it was, but there was no way I was going to be able to sleep until I found it again. I combed the whole house twice over and was about to give up, when I went back into the laundry room and lifted up a blanket on the floor. There was the snake underneath it. It took off with me in hot pursuit, chasing it with a pair of long BBQ tongs, which were the only things I could grab in my panic. In the end I cornered and killed the snake, because it was so aggressive and I was too scared to try to grab it alive and didn't know if it might be poisonous or not. Then I picked it up by its head (using the tongs) and walked it outside and flung it onto the street. It was my first real battle with a wild animal in Sayulita, and I was pretty glad I came out on top.
7. Tienes alguna historia que te gustaría compartir? Este verano, cuando me mudé a la casa que estoy cuidando, venia bajando la escalera una noche cuando vi una culebra grande sentada en una de las escaleras seseandome! Corrí para buscar algo con que atraparlo, pero cuando regrese, habia desaparecido. La puerta de mi cuarto estaba abierta, asi que no tenia idea si ella habia deslizado dentro de mi cuarto o donde estaba, pero no habia manera de que pudiera dormir hasta encontrarla de nuevo. Cuando busque por toda la casa dos veces y estaba a punto de renunciar, cuando regrese al cuarto de lavanderia y recogi una cobija del piso, alli estaba la culebra debajo. Quiso escapar, y yo le estaba siguiendo con unas pinzas de carne asada, las cuales eran las unicas eran las unicas cosas que pude agarrar en mi panico. Al final la atrape y mate, porque estaba tan agresiva y yo tenia demasiado miedo para intentar agarrarla viva y no sabia si podria ser venenosa o no. Luego la agarre por la cabeza (con las pinzas) y la lleve afuera donde la tire. Fue mi primera batalla verdadera con un animal salvaje en Sayulita, y estaba bastante alivianada de que yo gane.
8. Is there anything you would change in Sayulita? The only thing I would change in Sayulita is that I wish there was an elected person who spoke English and could relay important information to those of us who don't have the best Spanish but live here and want to be kept informed about current events. That way we would know the schedule of road pavings and closures, when spraying for mosquitoes will be done, what future plans are being made for our pueblo, etc. Right now I sometimes feel in the dark about these things, and if there was someone I could go to and ask about them, I would feel better and I'm sure many other foreign residents would feel the same.
8. ¿Cambiarias algo de Sayulita? La unica cosa que cambiaria de Sayulita es que me gustaria que fuera un oficial electo que hablara inglés y pudiera comunicar informacion informacion a los de nosotros quienes no hablamos tanto el español pero igual vivimos aquí y queremos estar informados de las noticias. De esta manera podriamos saber el horario de la construccion de las calles, o cuando fumigaran contra los mosquitos, o que planes a futuro hay para el pueblo, etc. Ahora a veces siento totalmente en la oscuridad en cuanto a estas cosas, and si hubiera alguien con quien podria ir y preguntar de estas cosas, sentiria mejor and estoy segura de que otros residentes extranjeros sentirian igual.
9. What would you say to a first time visitor or resident of Sayulita? I recommend residents of Sayulita take pride in our village by paying attention to garbage and recycling. If we all do our part and refrain from littering and collect our recyclables, then the town will be a cleaner and nicer place for us all to live in. I really hate seeing people litter, and it's up to all of us to not engage in this behavior and to take pride in Sayulita.
9. Que te gustaría decirle al primer visitante o al residente de Sayulita?Recomiendo que los residentes se enorgullezcan de su pueblo al prestar atencion a la basura y el reciclaje. Si todos hacemos nuestra parte y dejamos de tirar basura y collecionamos reciclables, entonces el pueblo sera un lugar mas limpio y bonito donde vivir. Odio ver las personas tirando basura, y es la responsabilidad de todos no comportarnose asi y tener mas orgullo en Sayulita.
