Though we did get a few drops this week, this summer has definitely felt dryer than seasons gone by. At just under 29 inches of rain for 2009 so far, we're well behind 2008's total of 41. Maybe it's time to organize a rain dance to open up those skies? Or maybe you'll just want to open up a nice bottle of tequila after reading about Mark Alberto Holt's adventures at the International Tequila Conference and his plans for a hosting an agave tasting challenge right here in Sayulita.
At least the dry days are good news for the continued road construction in Sayulita, with recent progress on the section of Av. Palmar in front of the Primary School. Entrando en la última semana de septiembre, escucho mucha gente preguntando, "¿Dónde están las lluvias??" A pesar de que cayeron unas gotas esta semana, este verano se siente definitivamente más seco que en temporadas pasadas. Con 29 pulgadas de lluvia para el año 2009 hasta ahora, estamos muy por detrás del total de 41 para 2008. Tal vez sea hora de organizar una danza de la lluvia para abrir los cielos? O tal vez sólo querrá abrir una buena botella de tequila, después de leer sobre las aventuras de Mark Alberto Holt en la Conferencia Internacional del Tequila, y sus planes para una competición de tequila aqui en Sayulita.
Al menos los días secos son buenos para la construcción de las calles que continúa en Sayulita, con progreso reciente en la sección de Av. Palmar en frente de la escuela primaria. Junior High School
New stairs have been recently completed as of September 8, 2009 at Sayulita's Public Junior High School. With donations from various community organizations including Grupo Pro Sayulita, the stairs were constructed. Approximately $20,000 pesos were used to complete the project.
 Before the stairs were installed, a steep dirt path was the route used by teachers and students alike. The stairs now allow access directly to the cafeteria and to the English class. Accidents were the main reason for the construction of the new stairs and to avoid any future incidents.
According to English, Spanish and Computer teacher Patricia Duarte, she slipped and fell twice before on the loose dirt surface sustaining minor injuries. At least one other former teacher and various students had complained of the unsafe path, bringing it to the attention of Principal Armando Galvan Rodriguez. After a meeting with various teachers, Mr. Galvan and community organizations worked as a team to raise money to pay the construction and material cost, resulting in a safe and easy path to education.
Nueva Escalera Completada
en Escuela Secundaria de Sayulita
Nuevas escaleras se han terminado recientemente el 8 de septiembre de 2009 en la Secundaria Publica de Sayulita. Con el apoyo de varias organizaciones comunitarias como el Grupo Pro Sayulita, las escaleras fueron construidas. Aproximadamente $ 20.000 pesos se utilizaron para completar el proyecto.
 Antes de que se hubieran instalado las escaleras, un empinado camino de tierra fue la ruta usada por los profesores y estudiantes por igual. Las escaleras permiten el acceso directo a la cafeteria ya la clase de ingles. Los accidentes fueron la principal razon para la construccion de las escaleras nuevas y para evitar futuros incidentes. Segun la maestra de Ingles, Computacion, y Espanol, Patricia Duarte, se resbalo y cayo dos veces antes en la superficie de tierra suelta sufriendo lesiones leves. Al menos un antiguo profesor y otros estudiantes se habían quejado de la ruta de acceso inseguro, con lo que llamaron la atención del director del plantel Armando Galvan Rodriguez. Tras una reunion con varios maestros, el Sr. Galvan y organizaciones de la comunidad trabajaron en equipo para reunir el dinero para pagar los gastos de construcción y material resultante en un camino seguro y facil a la educacion.

Could Sayulita host a premier Agave tasting challenge that could bring thousands of tourists (and dollars) to the area and promote the finest tequilas in the world? Sayulita Fish Taco Restaurant owner Mark Alberto hopes so, and wants to promote our pueblo to that end.Alberto recently returned from attending the World International Tequila Conference (Sept. 13-18) in Guadalajara. He and 20 other participants attended workshops, tequila industry discussions, and went into the field to visit laboratories and prestigious distilleries.
 For Alberto, collecting and selling fine tequilas "started off as a hobby and has become an obsession." It's not about shooting down foul-tasting, high voltage liquor. Fine tequilas are like fine wines - they are valued and must be sipped to appreciate their unique flavours. Last December, Alberto added a tequila bar to his restaurant Sayulita Fish Taco. "I have the largest selection in Nayarit," he said. He now sells 333 brands and by the end of the year, he will offer 450 choices. Almost 1,000 different types of tequila are being produced in the world today. Alberto said the response to his bar has been overwhelming. Tourists staying in other communities, like Punta de Mita, come here to taste his fine tequilas. His own favorite ("for now, not tomorrow") is 7 Leguas D'Antaño Extra Añejo. The most expensive brand he carries is Clase Azul Ultra Extra Añejo at $4,200 pesos per shot!
 Alberto wants to promote Sayulita as a potential hosting site for an international Agave tasting challenge, a two-day event that could draw 20,000 tourists representing a very lucrative possibility. He is encouraging organizers to consider Sayulita for the event. In the meantime, Alberto is learning more about the tequila making process, and is even considering developing his own tequila label. At the recent conference, Alberto met Carlos Camarena, Tequila Master Distiller for Tequila Tapatio. Considered the rebel of the tequila industry, his El Tesoro de Don Felipe brand wins numerous awards. Camarena incorporates old world techniques that create true masterpieces. Alberto calls him a "true genius" and an "artist", adding that meeting such masters and observing their techniques were highlights of the conference for him. "It was a true honor to spend one-on-one time in Distileria Rio de Plata and seeing the 100 barrel cellar where their 12-year Herencia Historico Extra Añejo rests. There are so many reasons why I'm doing what I'm doing, but it all comes down to the mentors that I have now met and become friends with."

Podría ser Sayulita el anfitrion del reto de degustación de Agave que podria traer miles de turistas (y dolares) al area y promover los mas fines tequilas en el mundo? El dueño del restaurante Fish Taco, Mark Alberto, espera que si, y quiere promover nuestro pueblo para este fin. Alberto recientemente regresó de asistir a la Conferencia Internacional Mundial de Tequila (13-18 de Septiembre) en Guadalajara. Él y otros 20 participantes asistieron a talleres, platicas de la industria tequilera, y visitaron laboratorios y destilerias prestigiosas.
 Para Alberto, coleccionar y vender tequilas finos "empezó como un pasatiempo y se ha convertido en una obsession." Ya no se trata de tomar el caballito lo mas rapido posible para aguantar el asco que provoca un tequila corriente. Los tequilas finos son como los vinos finos-son valuados y se deben de sorber para apreciar sus sabores unicos. En diciembre pasado, Alberto agregó una barra de tequila a su restaurante Sayulita Fish Taco. "Yo tengo la seleccion mas grande en Nayarit," dijo él. Ahora vende 333 marcas y para el fin del año, ofrecerá 450 variedades. Se producen actualmente en el mundo casi 1,000 tipos de tequila. Alberto dijo que la respuesta a su nueva barra a sido impresionante. Turistas que se quedan en otras comunidades, como Punta de Mita, vienen aqui para saborear sus finos tequilas. Su favorito ("por ahora, no para mañana") es 7 Leguas D'Antaño Extra Añejo. La marca mas cara que actualmente ofrece es Clase Azul Ultra Extra Añejo que cuesta $4,200 pesos por caballito!

Mientras tanto, Alberto aprendiendo mas acerca del proceso de como hacer tequila, y está considerando crear su propia marca de esta bebida.  8.What do you like best about Sayulita? I like everything about Sayulita. I think in general the quality of life is much better here than living in big cities.

9.One piece of advice for someone visiting Sayulita for the first time? I think everyone should try to surf and go out and swim in the ocean and take part in beach activities. I haven't met anyone who hasn't liked to surf and spend time on the beach.
9.Algun consejo para una persona que visita Sayulita por primera vez?Creo que todos deben de aprender a surfear e ir a nadar en el oceano y participar en las actividades de la playa. No he conocido a nadie todavía que no le gusta el surf y pasar tiempo en la playa.
10.If you could easily change ONE thing in Sayulita, what would it be? I'd like to see the town come together more and help each other and also make sports and activities for our youth. Other than that I like Sayulita the way it is and I hope it doesn't change too much and become a big city.

Me gustaria ver que el pueblo se une mas y que todos ayudan a mejorar el pueblo y tambien hacer mas actividades y deportes para los jóvenes. Aparte de eso creo que Sayulita es perfecto tal y como esta y espero que no cambie mucho y que no se convierta en una ciudad grande.
