Summer Dishes and Summer Drink Specials
Located in Sayulita, just above the town plaza! | | Greetings 4,789 El Sayulero Readers, Mexico celebrated 199 years of independence from Spain this week, with residents and visitors of Sayulita celebrating in the town plaza on Tuesday night. Julia Caranci reports on the festivities below. Walking around Sayulita lately, it's hard not to notice the explosion of new retail spaces popping up near the center of town. Michael Rooney looks at this recent boom in commercial construction, and at current business owners' expectations for the coming season. I for one am excited to see what shops and restaurants will be joining our town and making their homes in these new spaces. This week's El Sayulero interview is Angel Baltazar Ortega, a local Maistro, or Building Contractor, who has managed many projects in Sayulita, from houses to streets and more.
Sayulita Verde's tree-planting efforts continue on Saturday morning. If you'd like to pitch in, join them in front of the Centro Salud on Av. Revolucion, between 8:30 AM - noon this Saturday.
My summer loves this week? Happy hour at Don Pedro's; pretending we're on vacation; and reveling in the heat because cooler days will be busier days.

México celebró 199 años de Independencia de España esta semana, con los residentes y turistas de Sayulita celebrando en la plaza el martes por la noche - Julia Caranci nos informe de las festividades abajo. Mirando a Sayulita estos días, es difícil no darse cuenta a la explosión de los locales commerciales en construcción cerca del centro. Michael Rooney escribe del reciente auge en la construcción comercial, y mas de las expectaciónes que tienen los propietarios de negocios para la próxima temporada. Por mi parte, me siento emocionada a ver qué tiendas y restaurantes van a abrir en estos nuevos espacios. La entrevista de El Sayulero esta semana es Angel Baltazar Ortega, un Maistro local que ha manejado muchas obras en Sayulita, de casas a calles y mas.

We have been working on a steady round of improvements and additions to both SayulitaLife and El Sayulero. As always, our intention is to continually market Sayulita to the outside world while at the same time connecting our local population in a manner that positively contributes to the overall well being of our village.
We have launched four new attributes this week for your review:
 1. Online survey: Following the local interview, each week's El Sayulero will feature an online survey linking to an interactive voting area on the front page of SayulitaLife.com. We plan to change the question/answers every Friday and your suggestions are welcome.
 2. Sayulita Forum overhaul: Though I am still working on this, check out the new forum and the features available to members. Login with your username and password and see how it is easier than ever to read/share information about our village.
 3. Community Calendar: The Sayulita Community Calendar has been revamped to post new and upcoming events directly on the front page of SayulitaLife.com. Our goal is to provide a useful tool for the community to stay informed of all upcoming events. There is no charge to use this tool so please feel free to give it a try.
 4. Interactive Business Map: Businesses are now featured on their own map of Sayulita. Website users can now easily locate a Sayulita business from its personal webpage as well as directly from the interactive map.

| | New Commercial Construction
A Positive Sign for Sayulita
 Even in slow September, certain new commercial projects are well underway around town and contributing to a real sense of optimism about this coming High Season. There is commercial construction going up along part of Calle Revolucion, a multi-level structure being built on Calle Niños Heroes next to Rollie's Restaurant, and a new pizzeria-sports bar coming in before the bridge also on Revolucion that is scheduled to open in mid-October. Such activity is a good sign hopefully for a postive turn in the global and local economy, and for the village of Sayulita.
 As the only restaurant geared towards showing sporting events, besides the afore mentioned Yo Yo Mo's sports bar opening next month, Don Pedro's had a crowded house kicking off a Monday Night Football double header for the start of the NFL season. Chef/owner Nicholas Parrillo was all-smiles during the New England Patriots-Buffalo Bills game which excited Patriot fans with a last minute, come-from-behind win edging the Bills by a score of 25-24. When asked about the up-coming tourism season, Mr. Parrillo had a very positive view, mentioning that his partner will be bringing down two new big-screen televisions for the restaurant in anticipation of the high season crowds. Let's just say we're hoping for an economic comeback as sweet as the victory the Patriots had against the Bills the other night!
Nueva Construcción Comercial
Una Señal Positiva Para Sayulita
 Aun en este lento mes de septiembre, se están llevando a cabo ciertos nuevos proyectos comerciales en el pueblo, contribuyendo a un verdadero sentimiento de optimismo sobre la Temporada Alta que viene. Están construyendo sobre parte de la Avenida Revolucion, así como va a haber un nuevo edificio multinivel al lado del Restaurante Rollies por Niños Heroes, y un nuevo bar deportivo-pizzeria que espera abrir sus puertas a mediados de octubre. Tal actividad es una buena señal en esperanza de un cambio positivo en la situación economica global y local, y para el pueblo de Sayulita.
 Como el unico restaurante con ambiente para ver eventos deportivos, ademas de la anteriormente mencionado bar deportivo Yo Yo Mo's que abrirá el proximo mes, este lunes pasado Don Pedros tenia una casa llena--con todos los fanaticos del futbol americano disfrutando del partido de apertura del torneo de la NFL. El chef/dueño Nicholas Parillo era todo-sonrisas durante el juego de los Patriotas de Nueva Inglaterra contra los Bills de Búfalo, donde los emocionados seguidores de los Patriotas vieron el final del partido ganado por los Patriotas en un apretado marcador final de 25-24. Cuando se le preguntó sobre la temporada turistica que viene, el Sr. Parillo expresó tener un punto de vista positivo, mencionando que su socio va a traer dos nuevas pantallas gigantes en anticipación a la nueva temporada y las multitudes. Digamos que esta Temporada todos estamos esperando una reactivacion economica igual que la dulce victoria que tuvo los Patriotas contra los Bills este lunes!

Independence Day
 Unless you were hiding under your bed this week, you couldn't have helped but notice locals celebrating a great day in Mexican history: the hard-won fight for independence from Spanish rule that took place nearly 200 years ago.In Sayulita's square on Tuesday evening, locals dressed proudly in the bright colors of the national flag - red, green, and white - and served up traditional foods to eager locals and visitors alike. Delicacies included cakes and flans, aguas frescas, and pozole. At el Costeño's, musicians sporting red shirts serenaded diners. And in the streets, vendors pushed flag-laden carts. Near midnight, a chapter in Mexico's history was re-enacted in front of the church when the "grito" was called out into the night.
The history behind this ritual is a mythic event said to have taken place at midnight on September 16, 1810-when a revolutionary priest named Miguel Hidalgo made the call for war in order to push the Spanish colonial rulers out of Mexico. He rang the bell of his little church in the village of Dolores, Guanajuato and reportedly cried: "Long live our Lady of Guadalupe, death to bad government, and death to the Spaniards!" So began the 10-year Independence War, which ended in1821 when Mexico finally gained its freedom. To commemorate this history, on this day every year the grito is re enacted in every plaza in the country, and Sayulita is no exception. Homes, businesses, cars, and buildings were all decorated with Mexican flags and signs that read "Viva Mexico" as part of the celebration.
 However, there was a slight dampening on this year's celebrations since the parade that normally runs on the morning of September 16th was canceled. Judy Cindy Arce Salazar, who owns Luna Net Cyber Café with her husband Fabian, said her understanding was that certain events were cancelled this year due to precautions related to the swine flu. Yet the traditional parade was still held in other nearby towns like San Pancho, so the reason is not really known. Regardless, Judy emphasized that it remains vital for Mexicans to celebrate this event saying that these historical dates are important"because it is when we gained our own independence". While there was no parade on Wednesday morning, the town did host live music at the bull ring later that afternoon, and many locals attended and carried on with the celebration.

 A menos de que hayas estado escondiendote esta semana bajo tu cama, te habrias dado cuenta de los locales celebrando un gran dia en la historia mexicana: la dificilmente ganada guerra por la Independencia de los espanoles que tuvo lugar hace 200 anos. La tarde del martes en la plaza de Sayulita, los locales orgullosamente se vistieron con los brillantes colores de la bandera nacional - rojo, verde y blanco - y se sirvio comida tradicional para los ansiosos locales y visitantes por igual. Dichas delicias incluyeron pasteles y flanes, aguas frescas y pozole. Musicos con camisas rojas deportivas amenizaron la cena en el restaurante "El Costeno" y en las calles hubo vendedores empujando carritos llenos de banderas nacionales. Cerca de la medianoche, un capitulo de la historia de Mexico fue recreado en frente de la iglesia - cuando se dio el "grito".
La historia detras de este ritual es un evento mitico que supuestamente ocurrio la medianoche del dia 16 de septiembre de 1810-cuando un cura revolucionario llamado Miguel Hidalgo hizo el llamado para comenzar la guerra por la independencia. El tocó la campana de su pequeña iglesia en el pueblo de Dolores, Guanajuato y gritó "larga vida nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, abajo el mal gobierno, muerte a los españoles!" Así comenzó la guerra de independencia que duró dos años y que terminó en 1821, cuando Mexico finalmente ganó su libertad. Para comemorar esta historia, en este dia cada dia el grito es recreado en cada plaza de la republica, y Sayulita no fue la excepcion. Casas, negocios, carros, y edificios fueron decorados con la bandera mexicana y señales de Viva Mexico, como parte de la celebración.
 Sin embargo, hubo una situación que empañó la celebracion de este año, ya que el desfile que normalmente comienza en la mañana del dia 16 de septiembre fue cancelado. Judy Cindy Arce Salazar, quien es dueña del ciber-cafe LunaNet junto con su esposo Fabian, dijo que tiene entendido que ciertos eventos fueron cancelados este año como precaución contra la influenza. Sin embargo el desfile si se llevó a cabo en pueblos cercanos como en San Pancho, entonces la verdadera causa es desconocida. De todos modos, Judy emfatiza que todavia es vital que los mexicanos celebren este evento diciendo que este es una fecha historica que es importante "porque fue cuando se ganó nuestra independencia". Mientras no hubo un desfile la mañana del miercoles, el pueblo si albergó un evento de musica en vivo en la plaza de toros ese mismo dia pero en la tarde, y muchos locales asistieron y siguieron con la celebración.

 Ginger is very young but seems to already have had puppies. She simply appeared out of nowhere, and no one had seen her before. But she is not a barker and is quite calm. She listens to commands and will ignore other dogs' barking when we go for a walk. She is playful on the beach. Ginger is being leash-trained and is adapting quite well to that. She allows cats to come close and will not charge after them when commanded not to. So all in all she would make an excellent pet!!
We hope we can find her a good home. We would even be willing to pay for her shipment to the U.S. So please contact us to adopt or make an adoption and help Ginger! | |  1. Name of Interviewee: Angel Baltazar Ortega

2. Birthdate/ Age: I was born on August the 12th of 1973. I am 36 years old.

3. Born in Sayulita? No, I was born Patzcuaro. My father Angel Baltazar and my mother Alicia Ortega used to work for my uncle there.

4. Education level? I studied first grade here in Sayulita, then when I was 7 we moved to a little town called Las Parejas, north of the state. I studied there 2nd through 4th grades and we moved again to El Llano, close to San Blas, I finished elementary there and I studied at the Junior High. When I finished Junior High I worked for CONAFE teaching kids in Nayarit's mountain range for a year, I taught little children how to read and write in Las Higueras, in La Yesca municipality and then in Torrecillas, Jala municipality. After a year I started studying High School in San Blas, I wanted to become a Naval Mechanic but the high cost for the bus from El Llano to San Blas made me drop school and I decided to move back to Sayulita.
4. Nivel de educación? Yo estudié el primer grado aquí en Sayulita, entonces, cuando tenia 7, nos fuimos a vivir a un pueblito llamado Las Parejas, al norte del estado. Allí yo estudie de 2º a 4º de primaria, luego nos fuimos a El Llano, cerca de San Blas, termine la primaria y la secundaria allí. Cuando termine la secundaria ayude al CONAFE a darles clases a los niños en la sierra de Nayarit por un año. Enseñé a leer y a escribir en Las Higueras, municipio de La Yesca y luego en Torrecillas, en el municipio de Jala. Después de un año comencé la preparatoria en San Blas, yo quería ser un Mecánico Naval pero los costos del autobús de El Llano a San Blas me hicieron dejar la escuela y decidí venirme a Sayulita.
 5. Family history & information?My father is from Jalisco State and my mother is from Sinaloa, they met here in Nayarit, when they worked at the tobacco companies in Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit. They got married and then they moved to Pazcuaro to work with my uncle, Rogelio Baltazar, I was born then. After moving to different towns here in the state I went to Queretaro state for vacation and then I met my now-wife Irene Zuniga. I had to come back to Sayulita and we kept in touch through the phone and letters, and after a few months I went back to Queretaro to be with her and finally after six months of living in Queretaro we decided to move to Sayulita. Together we have two kids: Miguel Angel who's 13 and Fabiola, my little princess who is 7.

Mi padre es del estado de Jalisco, y mi madre es de Sinaloa, ellos se conocieron aquí en Nayarit, cuando trabajaban para las compañías de Tabaco en Santiago Ixcuintla, al norte de aquí. Ellos se casaron y se vinieron a vivir a Pazcuaro, para trabajar con mi tío, Rogelio Baltazar, entonces nací yo. Después de mudarnos a diferentes pueblos aquí en el estado, fui a Querétaro, de vacaciones, y allí conocí a mi ahora esposa Irene Zúñiga, me tuve que regresar a Sayulita pero nos seguíamos comunicando por teléfono y cartas, después de unos meses de hacer esto, regrese a Querétaro para estar con ella, finalmente después de seis meses de vivir en Querétaro decidimos venirnos juntos a Sayulita, y ahora tenemos dos hijos: Miguel Ángel de 13 y Fabiola, mi princesita de 7.
6. Employment/business history? I started working in CONAFE which is a program that sends kids who finished secondary or high school to teach kids in towns without schools or teachers. I worked there for a year, then I started studying high school, but I dropped out to move to Sayulita to work. I remember I was 16 so I asked for permission from my parents but they said NO! Then my uncle Rogelio Baltazar, a very well-known person here in town came to visit us in El Llano and I asked him to bring me here, he drove me back to Sayulita and left me with my aunt Concha, she gave me a bed to sleep in and food to eat. She also helped me to find a job as a "construction helper". I was just 16 so nobody took me seriously and I always was paid very little because at that time I didn't know anything about construction. After a few months I got a job for six months but I became tired of the manager because he was very hard to work with. Then my cousin Javier, who is the son of my uncle Rogelio, gave me a job with his construction crew and I worked with him for 3 years. I then decided to start my own business and I worked with my own crew for several months, but then after a while, somebody offered me a permanent job which I accepted. I worked there for 3 years too. I started my own crew again 8 years ago and we have been working on our own since then. I have worked here, in San Blas, Santa Cruz de Miramar, and obviously Pazcuaro and Pazcuarito. I have done everything in construction: I have built houses, cobblestoned streets, fixed minimal details, everything!
6. Empleo/Negocio/Ocupación? Yo comencé trabajando en el CONAFE que es un programa que manda muchachos y muchachas que terminaron la secundaria o la preparatoria a ensenar a niños en pueblos sin escuelas y sin maestros. Trabaje allí por un año, luego empecé la preparatoria pero la deje y me vine a Sayulita a trabajar. Me acuerdo que tenía 16 años así que les pedí permiso a mis padres pero ellos me dijeron NO! En ese entonces mi tío Rogelio Baltazar, un hombre que era bien conocido aquí en el pueblo, vino de visita a El Llano y le pedí que me trajera aquí, el me trajo de regreso a Sayulita y me dejo en la casa de mi tía Concha, ella me dio una cama donde dormir y comida para alimentarme. Ella también me ayudo a encontrar trabajo como ayudante en la construcción. Yo tenía nomás 16 así que nadie me tomaba en serio y siempre me pagaban muy poquito porque en ese tiempo yo no sabía nada de la construcción. Después de unos meses conseguí un trabajo fijo pero nada mas trabaje seis meses porque me canse del capataz por que era muy difícil trabajar con el. Entonces mi primo Javier, hijo de mi tío Rogelio, me dio trabajo en su cuadrilla de construcción y trabaje con el por 3 años. Luego decidí empezar mi propio negocio y trabaje con mi propia cuadrilla por varios meses, pero entonces alguien me ofreció trabajo permanente y yo lo acepte. Trabaje allí por tres años también. Después junte mi propia cuadrilla hace 8 años y comencé a trabajar por mi propia cuenta otra vez desde entonces. He trabajado aquí, en San Blas, Santa Cruz de Miramar y obviamente en Pazcuaro y Pazcuarito. He hecho de todo en construcción: he construido casas, empedrado caminos, arreglado detallitos, todo!
7. With your cu rrent Business success, what are your future plans? I want to keep working as hard as I am now and do good-quality, honest, and responsible work. I want to have happy clients who recommend me because my work is done with honesty. I also try to learn new construction methods, new things that help me to improve my work. Anyone cancontact me if they are interested in having me work on a project.
7. Con el éxito de tu negocio, cuales son tus planes a futuro?Quiero seguir trabajando tan duro como hasta ahora y ofrecer buena calidad, junto con honestidad y responsabilidad en el trabajo. Quiero tener clientes felices que me recomienden porque el trabajo esta hecho con honestidad. También trato de aprender nuevos métodos de construcción, nuevas cosas que me ayuden a mejorar mi trabajo. Cualquier persona me puede contactar si está interesado en que trabaje en su proyecto.
8. What do you enjoy the most in Sayulita? I like this town because it is friendly. We always have something to do, between working and enjoying the beauty of the town and the beach. Here I can find people from many different places. I like that!
8. Que es lo que mas disfrutas de Sayulita? Me gusta este pueblo porque es muy amistoso. Siempre tenemos algo que hacer entre trabajar y disfrutar la belleza del pueblo y de la playa. Aquí puedo encontrar gente de muchos lugares diferentes. Me gusta eso!
9. What is your favorite part of the business? I like that I meet people from other countries, other places. I always can say every time I do a new job, I also get a new friend!
9. Cual es tu parte favorita del negocio? Me gusta que puedo conocer a gente de otros países, de otros lugares. Siempre puedo decir que cada vez que hago un trabajo nuevo, también hago un nuevo amigo!
10. What is something you would like to see changed in Sayulita? I would like to see that people in Sayulita get the jobs in Sayulita. I also would like to see more paved streets, a more beautiful Sayulita.
10. Que es algo que te gustaría ver cambiar aquí en Sayulita? Me gustaría ver a la gente en Sayulita teniendo los trabajos en Sayulita.También me gustaría ver mas calles pavimentadas, un Sayulita más bonito.
11. If you could say anything to the readers of El Sayulero, what would you say? I want to invite you to visit Sayulita or come back to our town. I also want to thank all the people who come here to enjoy our beauties. And if you are coming for the first time to Sayulita, I truly hope you like it and enjoy it.
