This week Julia brings us a follow-up to the June article about Sayulita's Recycling Program and the "changing of the guard." Michael gives us an update on the latest construction on Calle Miramar, and El Sayulero for the week is Don Juventino Perez Padilla, owner of El Chorrito Liquor Store near the baseball field.

for Grant Approval If all goes as planned, there will be new funding and a new local face running Sayulita Recicla this fall. As reported by El Sayulero last month, Tracie Willis recently announced she was stepping down from her post as head of the program. Willis, owner of Choco Banana, launched Recicla two years ago. Grupo Pro Sayulita also provides support and funding for the recycling efforts. Willis recently said that she thinks it is time for locals to take over the program "for the love of their pueblo".
And that just might happen. Monica Jimenez will run Sayulita Recicla, provided promised funding is approved.
 Jimenez, who has lived and worked here since arriving from Guadalajara several years ago, started volunteering with the project last winter. "I am an educator. I used to be a teacher," she explained, adding that it is vital to teach the importance of recycling and the environment. "I want to wake up the unconscious minds to see the benefits of a clean Sayulita," she added. Over several months, Jimenez slowly became more involved; attending meetings, volunteering her time at the depot, and helping sell canvas bags as an alternative to plastic. She was impressed by the local residents who run the depot, and describes them as "super enthusiastic and super organized." But she noted that visitors from other countries tend to volunteer here more then locals, possibly because they have recycling at home. Her goal is to increase local participation.
Jimenez is waiting to learn whether Sayulita, San Pancho and Lo de Marcos have been approved for a joint grant of 100,000 pesos from the Mexican Government to run recycling programs in all three communities. If the money comes, and indications are that it will, she will head the local program and work with leaders in the other two participating communities.
 "I am very happy and thankful," she said, of the funding she hopes to receive, adding that it won't make anyone rich, but it will offset the cost to run the program in the three communities. Each community has a plan and will coordinate their efforts. San Pancho's depot will become the primary depot from which the recyclables from all three towns will be shipped out.
Jimenez hopes to make more improvements to Sayulita's appearance, foster pride in Sayulita, and encourage tourists to come back and also to say good things abroad about our community. As part of the education portion of the project, she is organizing free movie screenings every Friday evening starting in September to promote environmental awareness. aprobación de fondos Si todo sale segun lo planeado, habra una nueva financiacion y una nueva cara a cargo de Sayulia Recicla este otono.Tal y como El Sayulero informo el mes pasado, Tracie Willis anuncio recientemente que se aleja del programa. Willis, duena de Choco Banana, patrocino Recicla hace dos anos. El grupo Pro Sayulita tambien provee apoyo y financiamento. Willis declaro recientemente que es hora de que la gente local se haga cargo "por amor a su pueblo". Y eso tal vez podria ocurrir. Monica Jimenez se encargara de Sayulita Recicla, toda vez que los fondos prometidos sean aprobados.
 Jimenez, quien ha vivido y trabajado aqui desde que llego de Guadalajara hace ya varios anos, empezo como voluntaria de dicho proyecto el pasado invierno. "Soy educadora. Solia ser una profesora," explica, agregando que es vital ensenar la importancia del reciclaje asi como del medio ambiente. "Quiero despertar las mentes inconsientes para que vean los benaficios de una Sayulita limpia" agrega. A traves de varios meses, Jimenez poco a poco se fue involucrando mas: asistia a reuniones, voluntaria en el deposito y ayudando a vender bolsas de tela como alternativa a las de plastico. Quedó impresionada con los residentes locales quienes están a cargo del centro de reciclaje, y los describe como "super entusiastas y super organizados." Pero ella se dio cuenta de que los visitantes de otros paises tienden a participar como voluntarios mas que los locales, posiblemente porque hay programas de reciclaje en los lugares de donde vienen. Su meta es incrementar la participacion local.
Jiminez está esperando para saber si Sayulita, San Pancho, y Lo de Marcos serán apropados para obtener un subsidio del gobierno mexicano para los tres pueblos de 100,000 pesos para patrocinar los programas de reciclaje en las tres comunidades. Si el dinero viene, y parece que si vendrá, ella se encargará del programa local y trabajará con los lideres de las otras dos comunidades participantes.
"Estoy muy contenta y agradecida," dijo ella, sobre los fondos que espera recibir, agregando que nadie se enriquecerá con ellos, pero si ayudarán con el costo del programa en los tres pueblos. Cada comunidad tiene un plan y coordinará sus esfuerzos. El centro de reciclaje de San Pancho será el principal, del cual todos los materiales serán juntados y mandados afuera.
Jimenez espera mejorar la apariencia de Sayulita, fomentar orgullo en el pueblo, y animar a turistas a regresar y tambien decir cosas buenas de nuestra comunidad. Como parte del segmento educacional del proyecto, ella está organizando noches gratis de pelicula cada viernes empezando en Septiembre para promever una consciencia ambiental.  On August 25, 2009 construction resumed with the installation of new plumbing and drainage between the main avenue Revolución and Calle Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez, on the north end of the village. The installation will also level off the street, which had been badly riddled with potholes and large puddles over the past few months.
 According to supervising engineer Efrain Salva Avila (pictured), who heads the team in charge of the work from Bahia Teak Construcciones Inmobiliaria, this portion of Calle Miramar will take approximately seven days to finish and he plans on continuing down Calle Miramar towards the beach. The whole process will take approximately 22 days to complete depending on the weather. This project causes the road's closure during the late mornings and afternoons. Resident's are urged not to park in the areas where construction is going on and to use an alternate route when necessary. The road is still passable by pedestrians and bicycles, as well as by cars during the evening and early morning hours. Nuevo sistema de drenaje en la calle Miramar
 El 25 de Agosto de 2009, recomenzó la construcción en la zona norte del pueblo con la instalación de la nueva tubería del drenaje y agua potable entre la Avenida Revolución y la Calle Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez en. Con dicha instalación también se nivelara la calle, la cual ha sido terriblemente dañada por las lluvias, las cuales hacen grandes baches y enormes charcos.
 De acuerdo con el supervisor, Ing. Efraín Salva Ávila, quien dirige el equipo a cargo de dicho trabajo, de la Inmobiliaria y Construcciones de la Bahía, para terminar esta parte de la calle Miramar, les tomara aproximadamente siete días; después de esto, el planea continuar en la misma calle, rumbo a la playa. Todo el proceso tomara aproximadamente 22 días para lograr completarlo, dependiendo claro, del clima. Este proyecto hace que la calle este cerrada al transito durante la mayor parte del día. Se les recomienda a los residentes de la calle no estacionar sus coches en las áreas donde se esta construyendo, así como usar una ruta alternativa si es necesario. El camino es intransitable pero los caminantes todavía pueden circular por la misma, así también como las bicicletas y los coches, por las tardes y muy temprano por la mañana.

 Sugar was rescued from the street when she was just a puppy by a local family. Unlike many cats and dogs in Sayulita, she's been given a second chance at life because of the loving care from her foster friends. Sugar is 5 months old, spayed, vaccinated, in excellent health, and ready to find her way into a permanent, good home. This sweet dog would make a great addition to your family as she loves children, cats, and other dogs.
We are in need of foster friends. Without the help of the community we can only do so much. Whenever a stray animal is brought to us, we depend on volunteers to step up and assist as well. Otherwise, the animal is spayed/neutered for free and released back to the streets where it came from. Currently, we do not have a shelter as one of our programs and we cannot take in homeless animals. That's why WE NEED YOU!

3. Born in Sayulita? I wasn't born in Sayulita, but I first moved here in 1969.

4. Family History and Information? I have been married to my wonderful wife Blanca Estela Ruiz Arriola for 40 years. Together we have six children. The oldest boy is Joel and he is 39 years old, followed by my other son Wilfredo who is 38. My four daughters are Nora Luz who is 38, Sandra Naomi is 36, Blanca is 35, and the youngest is Anai Lizeth and she is 24 years old. We also have 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild named Jonathan who is 11 months. All of my family was born, raised, and still live here in Sayulita.
4. ¿Historia de la familia? He estado casado con mi maravillosa esposa Blanca Estela Ruiz Arriola por 40 años. Juntos tenemos seis hijos. El mas grande es Joel y tiene 39 años, luego mi hijo Wilfrido de 38, mis cuatro hijas son Nora Luz de 37, Sandra Noemí de 36, Blanca de 35 y la mas chica Anai Lizeth de 24. También tenemos 10 nietos y un bisnieto que se llama Jonathan y tiene 11 meses. Toda mi familia nació, se crío y vive en Sayulita.
5. Education Level and Future Academic Goals? I was mostly self taught as I left school after second grade to help my family with their ranch and anything else I could do to take some of the strain off of my parents. I did that until I met my wife and we moved to Sayulita to begin our future together.
5. ¿Nivel de Educación? Yo fui mas bien autodidacta porque tuve que dejar la escuela después del 2º grado para ayudar a mi familia con el rancho y con cualquier cosa que yo pudiera hacer para ayudar a mis padres. Hice eso hasta que conocí a mi esposa y nos mudamos a Sayulita para empezar nuestra vida juntos.
 6. Business History? When we first moved to Sayulita I looked for an ideal spot to open a small grocery store. In 1972 my wife and I opened El Chorrito and sold different types of groceries on the corner of Calle Playa Azul and Calle Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez. My wife and I continued running it when we had the opportunity to change it to a liquor store in 1999. The liquor store, I feel is much easier. Most liquor, for example, doesn't have an expiration date, or at least not one you really need to worry about unlike the grocery store which was a constant issue. The other benefit in my opinion is that we deal with about 90 percent less distributors now compared to when we ran the grocery store.
6. ¿Historia de trabajo? Cuando recién nos venimos a Sayulita busqué un lugar ideal para abrir una pequeña tienda. En 1972 mi esposa y yo abrimos El Chorrito, y vendíamos diferentes tipos de abarrotes, en la esquina de la calle Playa Azul y Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez. Mi esposa y yo continuamos atendiéndola hasta que tuvimos la oportunidad de cambiarla por una licorería en 1999. La tienda de licores, yo creo, es mucho más fácil. La mayoría del licor, por ejemplo, no tiene fecha de caducidad, o al menos no una de la que tengas que estar preocupado, como era en la tienda de abarrotes. El otro beneficio, en mi opinión, es que tienes que lidiar con 90% menos distribuidores comparado con las tiendas de abarrotes.
7. With your current business a success, what are some of your future plans? My wife and I live right next door to the store so our commute is rather simple. I don't see, or care to see anything change as far as our business. We have very low maintenance, great clientele and we have fun. It's very relaxed and that is how I would like to keep it.
7. ¿Con el éxito de tu negocio, cuales son los planes a futuro? Mi esposa y yo vivimos justo al lado de la tienda, así que no vamos muy lejos para trabajar. No creo y no veo que vaya a cambiar nada en cuanto al negocio. Tenemos un negocio que no necesita mucho mantenimiento, tenemos buena clientela y nos divertimos. Es muy relajante y así es como nos gusta mantenerla.
8. What do you enjoy most about Sayulita? I really enjoy the overall tranquility and peacefulness of Sayulita. Living here for 40 years I have seen a few changes, but the overall feeling of relaxation is still here. I also like the fact that my family is in a safe place and close to my wife and I.
8. ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas sobre Sayulita? Me gusta mucho la tranquilidad y lo pacifico de Sayulita. Viviendo aquí por 40 años he visto algunos cambios, pero el sentimiento en general, de relajación todavía prevalece. También me gusta el hecho de que mi familia esta en un lugar seguro y cerca de mi esposa y mío.
9. What is your favorite part of the business? My favorite part of the business has to be the diversity of our clients. The majority of our clients are people from out of town visiting. They just stumble upon our store or they are reffered by someone, which happens quite often here.
9. ¿Cual es tu parte favorita en el negocio? Mi parte favorita del negocio tiene que ser la diversidad de los clientes. La mayoría de nuestros clientes son de fuera, que solo vienen a visitar el pueblo. Ellos llegan a la tienda, o la gente les habla de nosotros, lo que pasa muy seguido aquí.
 10. What is something you would like to see changed in Sayulita? I would like to say nothing but the more I walk in the early morning along the beach, I see both businesses as well as residences washing off their areas with a hose. This unfortunately goes straight to the beach and eventually the sea. I would like people to be more aware of water usage. So to answer the question, I would like to see people going back to the old broom and dust pan to clean.
10. ¿Que es algo que te gustaría ver que cambiara en Sayulita? Me gustaría decir que nada, solo que por las mañanas cuando camino por la playa, veo a la gente y a los negocios lavando sus locales con la manguera. Esto, desafortunadamente, va directo a la playa y de ahí al mar. Me gustaría que la gente fuera más moderada con el uso del agua. Para contestar tu pregunta diría que ver a la gente regresando a la vieja escoba y el recogedor para limpiar.
11. If you could say anything to the readers of El Sayulero, what would you say? I would like to personally welcome anyone with a positive outlook to come and experience everything Sayulita has to offer. I would also like to remind visitors that on almost every street there are both containers for trash as well as recyclables. I feel if every visitor simply does their small part in keeping Sayulita clean, it will be better and healthier for everyone.
11. ¿Si pudieras decirle algo a los lectores de El Sayulero, que les dirías? Me gustaría darle la bienvenida personalmente a cualquiera que venga y experimente todo lo que Sayulita tiene que ofrecer. También me gustaría recordarles a los visitantes que casi en todas las calles hay contenedores para basura así como para reciclables. Pienso que si cada visitante hace su pequeña contribución para mantener limpio a Sayulita, entonces va a ser mas sano y mejor para todos.
