This place is absolutely fantastic and feels like an eight-year reverse time-warp. Anybody living or vacationing in Sayulita knows exactly what I am talking about. Empty beaches, zero traffic, welcoming waiters, combined with perfect temperature days and a calm clear ocean makes Sayulita all the better.
Yes, the H1N1 media scare has done tremendous economical damage to our village and its business owners for the time being. However, the new streets are going to be a welcome addition next year when Sayulita prepares for another banner season. In the meantime, tourism is already on the rise and locals are really savoring all the precious (and free) amenities offered by our little village in paradise! If you happened to walk to the North Beach last weekend, you had company: hundreds of land crabs suddenly appeared along the trail, in the bushes and by the hundreds on the beach.
Thousands of little legs brushing the leaves and grass made the whole jungle sound alive, and one had to watch one's step for fear of stepping on the antsy little critters.
Right now North Beach looks more like the surface of the moon, crab holes have turned up a large portion of the sand.
For those seeing this spectacle for the first time, it's truly an amazing natural wonder.
Tyiana Visfin of Punta Mita Expeditions, which specializes in eco-tourism, explained these land crabs live in the jungle and mountains (which explains why we don't seem them during the winter), but have now returned to the sea to breed, as they do in summer, generally coinciding with the change of seasons and the coming of the rains. She reports there are actually two types of land crabs arriving right now, the white and purple ones which appeared in large numbers on the North Beach last weekend, and a larger species of red crab.
Land crabs eat both vegetation and meat - they are known as tropical omnivores. They sense food initially by smell, then grab it with their pincers, tearing off pieces and putting them into their mouths. Crabs will test all sorts of material for food. Visfin has actually seen the larger red crabs eat the smaller white and purple variety.
These creatures are a species of crab that has adapted to live a predominantly terrestrial life. Land crabs belong to the family Gecarcinidae (order Decapoda/class Crustacea), and are typically terrestrial, square-bodied crabs that periodically return to the sea to breed - this is where their larvae develop. They can be found in tropical America, West Africa, and the Indo-Pacific region. Some travel inland as far as 8 km (5 miles). Adults weigh about 18 ounces and measure about four inches wide across the back.
"In my experience when they arrive it's about to rain," Visfin said. Indeed, the skies above Sayulita were overcast for much of last week, and humidity was high. She explained that the crabs' exodus last week may mean an early start to the rainy season this year.
Many locals report seeing land crabs in their yards - even inside their homes - during the wet summer months. Visfin pointed out the crabs are susceptible to being run over by cars and killed in accidents. She encourages residents to watch for the crabs and try to do their driving during the day, as land crabs tend to move around at night when it's cooler.
In her opinion, the land crab population has gone down considerably over the last five to 10 years, possibly due to a high mortality rate.
"We see a lot less every year," she said.

With travel becoming increasingly more expensive, there is a more economic option to consider when coming to or leaving Sayulita. The El Sayulero recently spoke to Wayne Harper, a backpacker visiting Sayulita from Canada who was not aware of the public bus system in Sayulita which prompted this article.
The Compostela buses run between the Sheraton Hotel in Puerto Vallarta and the main road in Sayulita. These buses operate between the hours of 6am- 9pm Nayarit time and cost only 20 pesos to Vallarta or 10 to Bucerias. The fare to the Mega Comercial, which is located on the outskirts of Bucerias is 12 pesos most of the time.
The buses also give front door service to and from the airport in Puerto Vallarta. This is a great option for the budget traveler and costs only 20 pesos compared to 400-600 pesos for a taxi. To catch the bus from the airport you walk straight out the door after you arrive. Once outside you can simply take the skywalk across the highway and you will find the bus stop.
You will want to look for the green and white Compostela bus. On the windshield it will say Sayulita along with Pto. Vallarta, Bucerias, Mezcales, etc... Please make sure the window of your bus has Sayulita written on it. It is easy to get confused because identical buses run to both Punta de Mita and San Pancho.
Autobuses económicos de y a Sayulita.
Cuando viajar se convierte en algo más caro hay una ruta más económica para venir o dejar Sayulita. SayulitaLife recientemente hablo con Wayne Harper, un mochilero que visita Sayulita desde Canadá, y quien no sabia del sistema de autobuses de Sayulita del que hablamos en este articulo. Los autobuses de Compostela corren entre el Hotel Sheraton en Puerto Vallarta y la calle principal de Sayulita. Estos autobuses operan entre las 6 am a las 9 pm, tiempo de Nayarit y el costo es de solo $20.00 a Puerto Vallarta y $10.00 pesos a Bucerías. El costo a Mega que esta justo en la salida de Bucerías es de $12.00 pesos casi siempre.
Los autobuses también dan servicio prácticamente en la puerta del aeropuerto de Puerto Vallarta. I would go back and forth between Tepic and the small town of Ahuacatlan, where I met my current girlfriend Karina. In Ahuacatlan my brother and I began a business recycling material for the community. This led to a job offer from Sayulita Recycling who needed a coordinator. I began as their coordinator in November and am now currently looking for a rewarding full time position here in Sayulita.

7. What is your favorite food in Sayulita? Shrimp. You name it...cevice, al Diablo, with garlic, I really love the variety of ways shrimp is prepared here in Sayulita! I especially like the dried shrimp as a snack. It is really like potato chips but with a fantastic flavor when you ad lime and chili.

8. What do you enjoy most about Sayulita? I just feel that the city is always alive with activity. Whether I am learning to surf in the morning, which I am right now, or lying on the beach in the afternoon, I always feel welcomed. And, this is my favorite time of the year for fishing.
