Sayulita Community: Earth Day Recap with Greer Fawcett
written by Greer Fawcett
The second annual earth day event was a huge success!
On April 22nd, 2024, hundreds of people gathered to clean up Sayulita, learn about the environment, and celebrate the lovely place we call home. Out of the 200 attendees, there were folks of all ages and from all over the world, including many locals of Sayulita and San Ignacio. Together we danced, laughed, learned, and ultimately came together to clean up Sayulita.
The afternoon started with information booths from local non-profits and artisans. Be sure to check out some of the awesome participants, including our local recycling center Azul Sayu, an ocean clean up crew from Puerto Vallarta “Limpia Tu Mar”, and local artists making scarves and other textiles from recycled materials, Culto Mar, amongst many others!
With live music provided by Groovewell, the kids of Costa Verde kicked off the volleyball tournament, and did environmental sign painting with BellaGCreates. Check out some of the signs the kids made for the Trashion Fashion event that’s coming up on May 14th.
Our main event was the beach clean up, and we had our largest turn out yet!
At sunset there was a surprise performance by Batala San Pancho to get everyone excited for the film festival.
As the sun went down, we showed a variety of short films and documentaries about a variety of themes from surf to environmentalism – special shout out my own documentary starring local legend Chilly Willy about Sayulita’s past and present, as well as Risa Machuca’s powerful short film, surf documentaries about Jonathan Melendres and Miguel Sinclair, and the LATAM premier of a Patagonia film.
Huge thanks to the generous donations from these local businesses who made the event possible: El Patio, Sunset Soiree, Alchemize House, MexEdge, Escondido Bar, La Rustica, Sayu Swirls, The Embers, Habibi, and Sur38.
See you at the next clean up!
