Local Writers Turn Playwrights for the 9th Season of Live Theater Sayulita

This year, Live Theater Sayulita’s (LTS) production will be a live “Radio Hour,” featuring two one-act plays by writers who have been participating with LTS as actors for several years. Judith Greber and Richard Carlson, who both live in Sayulita during the winter, have written The VERY Committed Marriage, and Too Hot to Handle, respectively.

Greber’s Marriage stays true to her form as a mystery writer. She has had 22 books published, including three contemporary novels, a historical novel, a book about how to write mysteries — and 16 mysteries, which she writes under the pen name, Gillian Roberts. The VERY Committed Marriage is Greber’s first play. It showcases her dry sense of humor and skill at handling the twists and turns of a plot that could qualify for an episode of How to Get Away with Murder.

Carlson chose a small beach town very much like Sayulita for his Too Hot to Handle. His play features a sultry redhead visitor who enlists the help of the town’s only detective to find someone who is plotting her demise. Is it the jealous saloon-keeper’s wife? The scorched former lover? Too Hot to Handle is an entertaining ride through the waves of emotion embroiled in the warm, humid days of a tropical paradise.

In his former life as a community organizer, environmentalist and management consultant, Carlson authored two books, numerous articles, edited a number of publications and wrote a series of newsletters entitled The Carlson Report, Straight Talk on the Environment. In addition to his writing skills, Carlson brings his experiences in improv comedy and the production of on-stage radio plays to our local community theater company.
Live Theater Sayulita’s Radio Hour will be on stage in The Secret Garden at Villa Sayulita, Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $350 pesos and include one beverage. Purchase your tickets at the Pueblo del Mercado, or online at theaterinsayulita@gmail.com.
