At approximately 40 pesos a bar, the price is substantially marked up, and they started asking themselves what they could do. “All of the wax here is imported from the States. We’re not aware of any that is made in Mexico. So, we decided that we would make our own,” the couple shared.
They started looking into possible formulas and found that the main ingredient in most surf wax is petroleum. “Sayulita has a big surf community, as well as a lot of environmentally conscious people. It made sense to make an organic version,” said Clint. “Our wax is 100% natural. The predominant ingredient is beeswax and it is sourced locally in Mexico,” Kristen added.
“Comparing organic wax to paraffin based wax is like comparing apples to oranges. So, we have had a lot of surfers test it out,” said Clint. Rodolfo González, a local surfer, from KM5 Surf Bar stated, "I used Litigoo’s cera orgánica at Chacala (La Caleta) when the waves were big and it worked really well."
The wax comes in an Aztec pyramid shape, for easy application, and is packed in recyclable material. Bacchus the bee, a naughty bee who is always finding trouble, is the wax mascot and adds an element of fun to the brand.
In the future, Litigoo Organic Surf Wax Company does plan to develop a paraffin-based wax also. “Certain people don’t trust organic wax. They don’t think it’s going to perform as well and they claim it’s too expensive. It will be locally produced and come in a recycled package. It will be at a much lower price than the organic wax,” said Clint.
Litgoo Organic Surf Wax Company currently has wax available at Punta Mita Surf Shop in Punta de Mita, Coral Reef in Bucerias and Stand Up Paddle Mexico in Sayulita. They are in the process of opening a retail store in Higuera Blanca, and will also sell t-shirts, hats, stickers, and traction pads, in addition to the wax.
