Sayulita is breathtaking in the summer as the vegetation turns lush and green from the summer rains, spectacular heat lightning flashes, and beautiful colors of orange, red, and pink fill the sky at sunset. It’s also the time of year when it can be very hot and humid, and many people choose to escape the heat by spending the summer in the States, Canada or a cooler location in Mexico. However, those who stay, tend to love the summers in Sayulita. Amy and John Cawrse, and their 10-year-old daughter, Ava, originally from Bend, Oregon, is one family that chooses to stay. “Bend is super dry heat. It’s the exact opposite of this tropical humidity,” the couple said. Nonetheless, they still find summer to be one of their favorite times of year.

John and Amy first came to Sayulita in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the town and the relaxed vibe. They bought a lot in 2001, and built their house in 2005. In 2012, they fulfilled their dream of living in Sayulita, when they moved here to live full time and enrolled their daughter, Ava, at Costa Verde International School.

There are many things that Amy and John like about the Sayulita summers. For one, the town becomes quieter and it is less chaotic than the winter months. “Everyone is so busy during high season, and people are entertaining their out of town guests. The summer gives us time to reconnect with others that live in Sayulita,” they said. “We also like the rain, the thunderstorms, and the lightning, which can be entertaining,” they added. Like most students, Ava is looking forward to her summer break from Costa Verde, which starts July 10th, so that she can sleep in.

Living in Sayulita in the SummerThe Cawrse family doesn’t let the summer heat slow them down and they remain active.  “We walk every morning, or surf. We just get hotter and sweatier, and there’s more to see on our walks, like the crabs that are all over the jungle paths,” the couple shared. After their morning walks, John likes to treat himself to a refreshing drink at Orangy Smoothies on his way to work.

To stay cool, the family spends a lot of time in their pool and takes several showers a day.  They also like to go to a nearby river, where the water is cool. On beach days, John and Amy enjoy sipping mango margaritas at Alas Blancas.
